Tuchkov Buyan Park, Saint Petersburg (2020)
The UIA endorsed the international competition for the architectural landscape design concept of Tuchkov Buyan park in Saint Petersburg (Russia). Architects and landscape designers from all countries were invited to submit their expressions of interest for this single-stage restricted competition.
Applicants were invited to submit information about their architectural firms and experience in designing and realizing public spaces.
- Experienced firms: three reference projects in landscape, public spaces and revitalization of urban spaces.
- Young firms: realized or unrealized projects in the same or other fields which best illustrated the quality of their work.
The jury selected 8 competitors (of which 2 were young firms) taking into account the quality and innovation of the submitted reference projects.
Revised calendar
Due to the COVID-19 health crisis, the international competition for the architectural landscape design concept of Tuchkov Buyan Park in Saint Petersburg (Russia) postponed the deadline for submissions from 8 May 2020 to 7 August 2020. The jury met in September 2020 to evaluate the entries.

Theme and objectives
The subject of the Competition was the development of a landscape architecture concept for the park, embankment, square, and adjacent streets. The concept was required to include landscape, city-building, planning, form-based, and architectural solutions and meet the demands of the Competition’s brief.
The goal of the Competition was to determine the best landscape architectural concept for the park that best responded to the demands of the Competition’s brief.
Eligibility
The call for applications was open to architects and landscape designers from all countries.
Eligible architects, landscape architects and urban designers were required to be qualified for practice in their respective countries.

Results
229 teams from 50 countries applied to participate. The jury selected 3 projects from among 8 entries and ranked them as follows
- 1st prize: Studio 44 (Russia) in collaboration with WEST 8 (The Netherlands)
- 2nd prize: JV Vogt (Switzerland) + Herzog & de Meuron (Switzerland)
- 3rd prize: Khvoya (Russia) + KARAVAN landskapsarchitecter (Sweden)

The 8 competitors invited to submit project proposals each received USD 60,000. In addition to this, the top three entries received the following prize money:
- First prize: USD 50,000
- Second prize: USD 30,000
- Third prize: USD 20,000
